We Chat To The Owners of The Tokenhouse As The Shop Turns 50 Years Old - Leftlion - Nottingham Culture

Congratulations on reaching fifty years this year - that’s a brilliant achievement for an independent retail business. Can you tell us a little bit about the early days?

Holly: We initially opened in 1973 over at Tokenhouse yard, just round the corner from here off Bridlesmith Gate, and in those days we sold handmade products and bits of old furniture which I used to restore because at that time it was my job. It just moved on from there really, when we discovered we could buy from wholesalers.

We Chat To Broadcaster Amy Voce About Her Time At Nottingham Trent University And Her Most Memorable On-Air Moments - Leftlion - Nottingham Culture

What drew you to studying at NTU?

I was working at a radio station in Leicester and I didn't want to move, I wanted to be able to do both at the same time, so I thought I’d go to Nottingham. I was taking a year out and I was working in radio and it was going well, but I wanted to go to uni because all my friends were having so much fun so I was jealous and I didn't want to be in the world of work yet, to be honest. I loved Communication Studies because I wasn't entirely sure at that point what

University Dos and Don'ts: Here's How To Get The Best Out Of Your Student Experience When Meeting New People - Leftlion - Nottingham Culture

You may not share a specific belief with someone, and that's okay! But you should approach any conversation around this difference with consideration and understanding, by listening to and appreciating their point of view. Nobody is saying that you have to suddenly abandon your viewpoint, but you must remember that other people’s opinions are valid, too.

If someone is choosing to share their opinion with you, you should respect them by actively listening to what they have to say, waiting for yo

We Chat To NTU Graduate And World-Renowned Filmmaker Jeanie Finlay About Her Long-Standing Connection To Broadway Cinema - Leftlion - Nottingham Culture

How did you get involved with Nottingham’s film community during your time at NTU?

I came to Broadway in my first week of university. At that time I think it was a single screen cinema, maybe a two screen cinema, and it had a little cafe. I then started working there in my second year, behind the bar. I was able to get free film tickets, so even though I wasn't in an association, it was like getting a film education. I think I have been to see films in the cinema at least once a week all of my

We Talk To Musician Jerub About Finding His Sound At The University of Nottingham And Performing At The King's Coronation Concert - Leftlion - Nottingham Culture

What was your experience as a student musician? How did you strike the balance between studying and putting energy into your creative outlet?

I felt like, in many ways, I was doing so much at that time that uni was almost a side hustle to my side hustle. I had two side hustles, no main hustle. I was doing music at the time, and it was through Covid as well. I did four years at university and two years was just focused on music a lot of the time. During Covid, I wrote a lot of songs and when I

We Had A Pint With The Brains Behind The Nottingham Ghost Walk To Celebrate Their 30th Anniversary - Leftlion - Nottingham Culture

My last week interning at Leftlion was unlike any last week of work I’ve ever had. I spent my Tuesday afternoon in the oldest pub in the world reminiscing and discussing collectable thermometers with five ghost fanatics. It is definitely one for the books, that’s for sure… Perched upon a chair in the Trip’s ‘Haunted Snug’, the crew of raconteurs began delving deep into the early days of the tour and how they have grown in popularity among both tourists and locals.

We Chat to Scott Taylor, the Brains Behind the We Share These Streets Podcast - Leftlion - Nottingham Culture

With the nature of this podcast topic, it can be difficult to find themes and details to hone in on from a story point of view, and then create an episode that people truly want to listen to. Scott outlines that the process of finding a suitable and engaging tale stems from “a discussion between us [Scott and Danielle] consisting of sending stuff back and forth for sometimes weeks.” This online communication works well for the pair, and Scott states that “from us conversing, I know a little bit,

Speak Easy: The Collaboration With Nottingham Playhouse Providing Young People With Creative Spaces - Leftlion - Nottingham Culture

Moving into the creative industry isn’t always encouraged. There’s a lot of negative language used when discussing a career in the arts. Which is why one of the main aims of the UNESCO City of Literature is to push young people to connect with their creativity. And, likewise, this is why Connor Brown and Abi Hutchison decided to set up Speak Easy. Inspired by lockdown, which “gave the time and freedom for so many people to turn to an artistic outlet”, the pair quickly realised that there was rea

I think all these things are interconnected. My work is influenced by music and literature and other people’s work. One hopes that your own work will leave its mark on oth
